Inclined screw or tubular conveyors not only lift the grit out of the chamber but also provide some washing and dewatering of the grit. Unfortunately they lead to rather inefficient use of plant area because of slope limitations. For the screw conveyor, long screws may require intermediate support and intermediate couplings, both of which are sensitive to wear. It is very important to use a powerful motor for the srew conveyor when full.
Chain and bucket elevators are mainly used with horizontal-flow and aerated grit chambers. Factors to be included in the design are similar to those for inclined screw collectors.
Clamshell buckets are moved by an overhead monorail track. This method, however, provides inconsistent grit removal, requires flow interrruption of the chamber during grit removal, lacks effective dewatering and washing, and may generate odors.
Pumps: Pumping grit from hoppers makes economical use of space because pumps are located in a dry well adjacent to the chambers. This flexible arrangement allows each pump to serve any of the multiple chambers.
