Screening, which removes ovesized solids, is distinguished from comminution and grinding, which reduce the size of solids.
Bar screens are the first unit treatment process in a wastewater treatment plant. They remove solids and trash that could otherwise damage or interfere with downstream operations such as pumps, valves, mechanical aerators, and biological filters. Coarse sreens consist of vertical or inclined steel bars spaced at equal intervals across a channel through which wastewater flows and are either manually or mechanically cleaned.
Manually cleaned bar screens have 30- to 50-mm openings with the bars set 30 to 45° from the vertical to ease cleaning. Generally mechanically cleaned screens are in operation today. They have openings ranging from 6 to 38 mm, with bars set from 0 to 30° from the vertical. Compared with manual cleaning, they tend to reduce labor cost and improve flow conditions. |
