Volatile Organic Contaminant

Emissions were measured with floating flux chambers, which were positioned on the surfaces of the wastewater equalization ponds, dissolved air flotation (DAF) units and activated sludge tanks. The flux chambers float on the water surface, isolating the off-gas from the DAFs and activated sludge diffusers to permit sampling. For quiescent surfaces, such as the equalization basins, sweep air, provided by a cylinder of zero-contaminant air, was passed through the flux chamber to produce a quantifiable air emission for analysis. Emissions over both clear and oil-covered surfaces were tested to determine if emission rates differed.
