Digesters are used to stabilize sludge and to encourage the formation of methane and other gases which can be drawn off the digester structure and then be stored or used for incineration. Stabilized solids settle at the bottom of the tank for removal and further processing. Today high-rate digesters are widely used, because they aid digestion by the use of heat and mixing.
